Arboretum

Following past discussions with residents, we are aware there is a desire to provide restrictions within the Arboretum area to reduce cut-through traffic and to make the streets safer and a more pleasant environment for those living there.

The trial scheme that took place last year led to a reduced level of cut-through traffic, indicated by the monitoring carried out. However the council also received a number of responses to the trial about some of the measures that didn't work as successfully.

After reviewing the trial and comments received, and with the additional funding received through the Active Travel Fund, a proposal for a permanent scheme has been developed. We would welcome your views on the proposed measures outlined below. We would also like to hear from you if you would not like any changes, or if there is anything else you would like us to consider.

The scheme includes the following features at locations indicated on the plan:

  • Two way closure (at Mansfield Road/Peel Street)
  • Restricted movements (Peel Street/Addison Street junction)
  • Carriageway narrowing/traffic calming
  • Pedestrian crossing improvements
  • By implementing these changes we would ensure that all routes remain open for walking and cycling for the benefit of residents and those who opt to use these quieter streets as part of their longer journey.

If there is support for the proposals we would look to install the scheme within the next year. Any permanent changes would also be subject to further consultation including the legal statutory processes.
