The Covid-19 pandemic has led to people becoming more active. Cycling has great benefits for physical and mental health, and by replacing shorter car journeys, we can all help to reduce harmful emissions and help the city achieve our aim to be carbon neutral by 2028.

As part of a programme of works across the city, we are looking to provide upgraded cycle facilities along Beechdale Road, Hollington Road and Wigman Road to make cycling a safer and a more enjoyable experience. The proposals include:

  • Improved cycle links to Ring Road cycle lanes and Lidl development
  • Segregated two-way cycle lane on north side of Beechdale Road from Lidl to Robins Wood Road
  • Removal of existing central refuge along Beechdale Road from Western Boulevard to Beechdale shops
  • Junction and pedestrian crossing improvements at the Radford Bridge / Redbourne Drive junction
  • Improvements / enhancements to the area outside Beechdale shops including additional crossing facilities
  • Segregated two-way cycle lane on north side of Hollington Road
  • Removal of existing central refuge along Hollington Road.
  • Changing the Bathurst Drive Roundabout to a ‘T-junction’ with improvements for pedestrians
  • Upgraded segregated single-way cycle lanes on both sides of Wigman Road
  • Retaining the central refuge along Wigman Road with possible additional crossing points provided
  • Improving the Wigman Road / Chingford Road /Cairncross Road junctions to include pedestrian crossing facilities
  • Review of the existing traffic calming measures on Wigman Road
  • On Beechdale Road between the roundabout at Beechdale shops and the junction with Aspley Lane / Strelley Road, the existing cycle lanes and central refuge will be retained. Junction improvements at Harvey Road / Kingsbury Drive and Fremount Drive are being be investigated

This project is part of Nottingham and Derby’s Transforming Cities programme. Working in partnership, Nottingham City and Derby City Councils secured £161 million from the Department for Transport to invest in local transport infrastructure that will improve sustainable transport, support growth, and encourage more low carbon journeys.
