Haydn Road

Proposed traffic calming and sustainable drainage scheme in Haydn Road, Sherwood

Nottingham City Council is proposing to introduce the second phase of the traffic calming measures for Haydn Road, following the installation of two electronic Vehicle Activated Signs in 2019.

The proposals are designed to reduce traffic speeds on the approaches to the busy shopping area on Haydn Road, as well as offering locations for pedestrians to cross the road.

Alongside the traffic calming, there are proposals for a sustainable drainage scheme. The City Council is designated as a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) and has a legal duty to develop, maintain and apply a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy. As part of this strategy, the Flood Risk Management team seeks to deliver projects which reduce the risk of flooding across the city.

Haydn Road has a history of surface water flooding issues, particularly in extreme storms, which the Flood Risk Management team would like to address.

The team has secured funding to retrofit sustainable drainage features along Haydn Road, to help slow the flow of flood water and to provide environmental benefits to the street. It is proposed to deliver a scheme involving the planting of trees in specially designed pits which collect surface water, as well as possible rain gardens.

The proposals are listed below and are shown in the following images:

  • Introduce a raised table to the west of Devonshire Road which will include a tactile paved crossing. The footway will be built out either side of the road to narrow the crossing distance to approximately 7.5 metres. The top of the raised table will be approximately 3 metres long (5.5 metres long in total) and constructed in asphalt to a height of approximately 75mm above the existing road level and will cover the full width of the road.
  • Introduce a raised table to the east of Victoria Road which will include a tactile paved crossing. The footway will be built out either side of the road to narrow the crossing distance to approximately 6 metres. The top of the raised table will be approximately 3 metres long (5.5 metres long in total) and constructed in asphalt to a height of approximately 75mm above the existing road level and will cover the full width of the road.
  • Install sustainable drainage measures within build outs around the junctions of Crossley Street, Devonshire Road, Haydn Avenue, Wentworth Road and outside properties no. 240 – 244. Please note, subject to further detailed on-site investigations it may not be possible to fund all of the sustainable drainage measures as part of this scheme. However, if there is public support we would look to fund any remaining features as part of a future scheme.
  • The sustainable drainage will include a mixture of low level planting, sometimes referred to as rain gardens, as well as tree pits. Example Tree Pit: (Hammersmith, London)
  • Most of the build out features are located within the extents of existing double yellow lines to limit the loss of parking spaces.
  • Please let us know whether you support these proposals and any comments by Wednesday 21 July.
