School street - Djanogly Northgate Academy

School street - Djanogly Northgate Academy

We have previously installed a School Street outside Djanogly Northgate Academy using temporary barriers.

After securing additional funding through the Government's Active Travel Fund, we are now proposing to improve and make permanent this scheme.

The roads outside schools are very busy at school drop off and pick up times. This leads to traffic congestion, idling vehicles, pavement parking and limited opportunities for pedestrians to cross the road, as well as difficulties for local residents and businesses.

We want to change this by reducing the amount of traffic on the roads outside schools, through the School Streets initiative. The scheme will help to provide a safe and welcoming space to encourage more children and parents to walk, scoot and cycle to school rather than travel by car.

During the trial scheme it was observed that a number of children were crossing North Gate near to the school. As such, before an upgraded School Street scheme is introduced we are proposing to install a zebra crossing.

The plan below shows the proposed zebra crossing, as well as locations and details of the wider proposal, which includes:

• A planter, which will include a tree and some low level shrubs, to replace the temporary barrier

• An electronic sign similar to that shown in the image below

• Changes to lining

• A new zebra crossing on North Gate near to Suez Street

The planter will be in place at all times and days of the week, and the flashing amber warning sign will indicate when traffic should not enter the area. The School Street will not be available for through traffic or for school pick up and drop off.

Access will be maintained for residents, school staff and businesses as well as delivery vehicles. We are aware from previous feedback that there is enthusiasm for the scheme to be enforced. In the future, when the government provides the relevant powers, we will be considering a camera enforceable restriction. This would be subject to a full consultation exercise.

We will be installing the planter at the earliest opportunity but we are seeking your comments on the proposal to make this scheme permanent.
